Biography and career

Stephen Maine

Stephen Maine (born 1958) is an abstract painter, writer, curator and American professor.  He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and Cornawall, Connecticut.

He writes now for Hyperallergic.com, He is  a member of the International Association of Art Critics, or association internationale des critiques d'art (AICA).

He currently teachs at the State University of New York at Purchase, and Hartford Art School, University of Hartford.

His paintings awaken and present contemporary ideas about color, composition, surface and process. The color itself, and the material properties of painting as an integrated color, provide Maine with its main inspiration. Its open and intentionally imprecise production methods yield results that can not be predicted accurately. The artist said, "This work has given me a concrete way of thinking about compositionality, seriality, improvisation, presentation and the psychology of visual perception." In a process that closely resembles relief, Maine uses textured surfaces to apply fluid acrylic paint indirectly to a prepared canvas.

In a 2015 article in The Brooklyn Rail, artist and writer Tom McGlynn described Stephen Maine's work as follows: "Maine has a clear formal control over its palette, because of a long investigation of color, translucency, and the influence of color on the near-permanent movement tectonics of" painting space "...
