"Exploring my personal photographic archives, my works reflect on identity, memory, and imagination, proposing new ways to look at photographs and shifting our attention from their descriptive qualities to subjective readings. In each image, I make interventions that stimulate emotional and sensorial experiences and resignify landscapes as we see them.
Triggered by Susan Sontag's book "On Photography," in which she sees photography as a medium that best manipulates the mind, calling it a "mental object," I started to produce images that would take viewers to imaginary spaces, built through an intimate investigation process that begins with my journey as a traveler and immigrant. The Neo-Concrete art movement has also been a reference for its relationship between life and artmaking. Works by Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica were influential on my experimentation with playful, geometrical shapes and how I deconstruct formal elements in photography to elaborate playful atmospheres.
Departing from pictures and inspirations mainly from the universe of photography, my works bring images of familiar places that gain new perspectives with hand-colored elements. In "Fragmented Frames", my most recent and ongoing series, I continue my research on the notion of time in the photographic image using film photos and geometric interventions that resonate with these landscapes. What comes out of these complex compositions are unique discoveries that connect scenes from the past to create landscapes of the future."
Alice Quaresma was born in Brazil in 1985 and currently lives in New York. She has been experimenting with materials that allow her photographs to be sensorial and playful, pushing the boundaries of photography as a descriptive medium. Quaresma has participated in exhibitions in institutions around the world, such as Patrick Heide Contemporary Art (London), Sobering Galerie (Paris), Felix Frachon Gallery (Brussels), Sotheby’s Institute (New York), Centro de Cultura Laura Alvim (Rio de Janeiro), Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, and A.I.R Gallery (Brooklyn). She had her first institutional solo show at Caixa Cultural São Paulo in 2018 and launched her first book, "Playground,” with the French publisher Editions Bessard in 2019. Awards include the Photoworks Festive Commission Prize (2021), Aperture Foundation Summer Open Prize (2019), Houston Center for Photography Annual Exhibition Prize (2019), Foam Talent Prize (2014), and PS122 Exhibition Prize (2009).
